To nobody's great surprise, Manchester United's returning midfielder will take the number 6 shirt. With Memphis Depay currently wearing 7, Juan Mata in 8, Wayne Rooney unlikely to relinquish the no. 10 shirt and Anthony Martial newly installed as no. 11, there really wasn't any option among all the proper numbers. His old no. 42 was free, but apparently he's too big a deal these days.
Paul Pogba!
The no. 6 shirt has a proud history at United. When the Premier League came into being, Gary Pallister was the incumbent and anchored United to four league titles. Jaap Stam took over in 1998-99 and won the treble. Laurent Blanc had one relatively inglorious season in the shirt, Rio Ferdinand had it for a year, but more recently it's been the property of first Wes Brown, then Jonny Evans, fine servants both. All of which rather suggests that Pogba's been bought to shore up the defence. Intriguing.
Still, though. Paul Pogba!
