Avengers: Infinity War—Prepare to be shocked, directors say

A lot has been at stake in past Marvel movies—the destruction of Earth and Hydra’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D, for example. But we’ve never really felt the Avengers themselves have been in much danger. Sure, Tony Stark came close to death a few times, but, for the most part, our heroes have saved the day without breaking a sweat.
However, according to the Russo Brothers, who are directing Captain America: Civil Warand Avengers: Infinity War, that’s going to change.
In a new interview, the brothers talked about what Civil War means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how Infinity War will raise the stakes to a “whole new level.”
“The stakes of both Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War movies are going to be very high, and there will be a price to pay for the characters,” said Joe Russo. “That’s the whole point of cumulative storytelling. We’re going to go on emotional journeys with these characters. We’ve got a lot invested in the emotion… As filmmakers, we believe in stakes. You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay in Civil War.”
As for what we should expect from Infinity War, Joe Russo said audiences will be shocked when the two-part movie hits.
Of course, the directors don’t reveal what in the movies will happen to shock audiences, but it’s not hard to speculate. When these films come around, there will very likely be a lot of death—something Tony Stark envisioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Plenty more stories need to be told before we get to Infinity War—Marvel is going to releaseCivil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man, Thor: Ragnarokand Black Panther—all building up toward a monumental conclusion that will likely lead to some of our most beloved heroes dying.
Whether audiences are ready to see people like Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Captain America die remains to be seen.
